Reports coming from New Zealand this morning, indicate that Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt, could be returning to his homeland to take up a coaching role.

A representative of the Super Rugby winning side, Highlanders, says that they are currently seeking to draft in the services of Schmidt, according to the New Zealand Herald. They have also contacted a number of other coaches.

It's being touted that by taking up a position in New Zealand, it could potentially pave a way towards pursuing the All Blacks head coach job when Steve Hansen steps down.

Highlanders CEO Roger Clark, says that since their current boss is on a one-year contract, this could be a good opportunity for Schmidt to begin coaching in New Zealand now, thus giving himself the best possible chance of succeeding Hansen.

Hansen is rumoured to be staying with the All Blacks until 2019.

This news comes the day after Ireland recorded a strong victory over South Africa in Cape Town.
