Athlone Town have been punished after failing to field a team for last week's Airtricity League First Division fixture against Waterford United.

The Midlands club have been hit with a €1,000 fine, along with a further €4,000 suspended.

Waterford have been awarded a 3-0 result for the match, with Athlone Town forfeiting the fixture.

"The FAI disciplinary committee has issued a number of sanctions to Athlone Town following the non-fulfilment of the fixture against Waterford United on Friday, June 3rd," said the FAI in a statement.

"Athlone has been handed a €1,000 fine with an additional €4,000 suspended, which will only be payable if they fail to fulfil another competitive fixture this month.

"Waterford have been awarded a 3-0 result for the match, with Athlone Town forfeiting the fixture.

"The next fixture between the two sides on Friday, August 5th was set to be played at Athlone, but will now be played at Waterford's Regional Sports Centre and Waterford will retain all gate receipts from this fixture.

"Earlier this week, the FAI ordered an independent review of Athlone Town in which an independent person will meet with all of the relevant stakeholders of Athlone Town to discuss and support the long-term future of the club, and this is an ongoing process."
