A footballer in Argentina has died in a tragic on-pitch incident.

Michael Favre (24) was playing for provincial club San Jorge de Villa Elisa when he fell to the ground after a battle for the ball against Geronimo Quintana, an opposition player for Defensores de Colon.

Quintana's knee accidentally hit Favre in the head as he fell to the ground.

Initially it appears as if Favre was okay as he gets up and remonstrates with his opponent for the initial jostle for the ball.

But seconds later as players from both sides milled around both players, he was hit by the forearm of one of Quintana's team-mates which left him prone on the ground, before he fell into an unconscious state.

He was taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The Argentine Football Association later released a statement to express their condolences.

"The AFA expressed his condolences for the death of Michael Favre, San Jorge player of Villa Elisa, and sends its support for the family and the club," they stated.

"The Argentine Football Association expresses deep sorrow over the death of Michael Favre, who plays for Club San Jorge, which occurred while playing against Defensores.

"This association also expressed support for the Favre family, and also the Club San Jorge."
