The shop was opened at the weekend in Glenullin
Glenullin GAA Club from Derry have paved the way for clubs around Ireland by opening their own supermarket.
The move may be seen by clubs around the country as a chance to increase revenue in club and to tighten links in the community. Glenullin is a located between Ardagh and Dungiven and is isolated from many shops in the local area.
The club were one of the first in Ulster to install floodlights at their ground and are seen as one of the most progressive clubs in the province. According to the Irish News, the supermarket was a community venture despite being located in the GAA's grounds.
Dennis Heaney told the Irish News, that building costs were kept down by using club members in the building process. "We restored an existing building in the club and all the work was in-house. There’s no-one taking credit for this; all the work was done by club members. If we needed a plumber, one of the boys did it and brought his own materials; it is a real community effort."
