The Argentinian is recognised by the league for the first time in the competition's two and a half season history
When you consider that Lionel Messi has picked up the Ballon d'Or award five times since 2009, it's amazing to consider that he's never actually been named La Liga Player of the Month in that time.
Moreover, before November 2015, no Barcelona player had ever picked up the accolade.
Neymar finally did away with the unwanted record when he won the award last winter after scoring 14 times in all competitions.
Now, finally, the league has recognised Messi for the genius that he is by awarding him player of the month for January, 22 months after the competitions conception.
The Argentinian now joins the ranks of arch nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Costa, Antoine Greizmann and Diego Godín.
"Messi's remarkably consistent form is a constant reminder of exactly why he is such a key figure in Luis Enrique's side" a statement read.
"The Argentine constitutes one part of one of the most feared attacking trios in Liga BBVA history alongside Neymar and Luis Suarez: the MSN.
"Barcelona's start to the calendar year was almost flawless, with four wins and a draw, in which the 28-year-old scored six times, including a hat-trick against Granada CF as well as important strikes against Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club and Malaga CF."
