This season has seen the Premier League hierarchy turn on its head.

Leicester will be deserved leaders on Christmas Day and teams like Watford, West Ham and Crystal Palace are performing well above expectations.

On the other hand, Premier League champions Chelsea are continuing to struggle and winning the Champions League currently looks like their only hope of returning to the competition next year. Liverpool have struggled this season and new manager Jurgen Klopp is finding out the depth of his issues at the club.

Nick Harris from sportingintelligence.com has compared the plight of the five biggest teams in the Premier League this season, compared to what would have been perceived as five of the smallest at the start of the season. It does not make for comfortable reading for the big sides.

With the television rights money constantly getting bigger, smaller clubs are now able to buy better players on a consistent basis. It looks like we may be entering a new era in the Premier League, sooner rather than later.
