Creating a sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed science-fiction films of all time, itself based on an iconic novel by arguably the most famous science-fiction writer of all time, is no easy feat.

Set 35 years after Ridley Scott’s landmark original, the first full trailer for 2049 was teased by star Ryan Gosling at CinemaCon earlier this year, telling a crowd of fans, “Prepare to start going steady with the edge of your seats.” And based on the first trailer, he’s not wrong.

Gosling plays Officer Q, a new blade runner working for the LAPD. Discovering a secret plot to destroy what remains of civilisation, Q seeks out Rick Deckard, played by cinematic renaissance man Harrison Ford, who’s been missing for thirty years.

While the plot and cast, which also includes Jared Leto and Robin Wright, should fill plenty of seats alone, movie buffs everywhere are salivating at what Canadian director Denis Villeneuve can bring to the franchise.

Having bagged an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Director’ for last year’s mind-bending alien movie Arrival, Villeneuve has already lined up the big screen remake of Frank Herbert’s Dune as his next project. Between the three films, he is firmly establishing himself as the director to take sci-fi to the next level of critical filmmaking, with Roger Deakins back on cinematography duties.

Blade Runner 2049 is due to open on October 6th, with the opening trailer showcasing incredible visuals and production values and promising the most intriguing blockbuster of the year.
