Emmanuel Macron has won the French presidential election

Emmanuel Macron has won the French presidential election, according to projections.

The centrist candidate has won more than 65.5% of the vote, comfortably beating far-right candidate Marine Le Pen who got 34.5% of the votes. 

It marks a stunning rise for Mr Macron, who only set up his En Marche! (On the move) party last year.

 

Martin refuses to outline position on abortion

The leader of Fianna Fáil has refused to reveal his stance on Ireland’s abortion laws.

Micheál Martin has pledged to allow party members a free vote on the issue – adding that the people have a right to decide on what happens to the Eighth Amendment.

On Yates on Sunday this afternoon, Deputy Martin said he has always come from a pro-life background – but refused to be drawn on how he would vote in any potential referendum.

 

Maternity hospital protest gets underway in Dublin

Hundreds of people are marching in Dublin this afternoon calling for the National Maternity Hospital to be kept in public ownership.

The various groups- including ‘Justice for Magdalenes’ (JFM) and ‘Parents for Choice’ (PFC) have said the hospital belongs in public not private hands.

The Minister for Health Simon Harris has insisted he is “as determined as ever” to go ahead with the project and has called for a period of calm to discuss the plans with the various hospital boards ahead of a planning permission decision from An Bord Pleanála – due in the autumn.

 

Man suffers serious head injuries in assault outside Dublin nightclub

A man has suffered serious head injuries in an overnight assault outside a nightclub in Dublin.

Emergency services were called to the night club at Airside Swords at about 3:40am this morning.

The injured man - believed to be in his thirties - was rushed to Beaumont Hospital where he is being treated for serious head injuries.

 

Sunday Night Takeaway: Wenger finally beats Mourinho

Arsene Wenger finally beat a Jose Mourinho side as Arsenal overcame Man United 2-0 at the Emirates on Sunday.

United fielded a weakened team as they prepare for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final with Celta Vigo on Thursday.

The first half was a fairly tame affair with hardly any clear cut chances created.
