Gardaí launch murder inquiry following woman's death in Cork

Gardaí have launched a full murder investigation after a woman was pronounced dead following a suspected assault in Cork overnight.

39-year-old Nicola Collins was discovered with serious injuries when emergency services were called to a flat on Popham's Road in Farranree at around 3.30 am.

Medical officers tended to Ms Collins at the scene, however they were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead.

Gardai have arrested a 42-year-old man - originally from Charleville in North Cork - for questioning and he is being detained at Mayfield Garda Station.

A full technical examination has been taking place and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
