A US Navy sailor has been arrested in Dublin on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman.

The sailor was arrested after an alleged incident at a hotel in the capital in the early hours of yesterday morning.

His ship - the USS Donald Cook - was docked in Cobh, Co Cork for a scheduled port visit.

In a statement, the US Embassy confirmed an alleged sexual assault incident was reported.

The statement said the US Navy is 'cooperating fully' with investigations by An Garda Síochana.

Gardaí say the arrested man is currently detained at Store Street Garda Station.
