McDonald's is investigating after a tweet from its official corporate Twitter account called Donald Trump a "disgusting excuse of a President".

The offending tweet was sent earlier today, suggesting "we would love to have Barack Obama back".

According to The Guardian, the tweet was posted shortly after 9.15am EST earlier today. It was deleted around 15 minutes later.

In a response posted this afternoon, the company said: "Twitter notified us that our account was compromised.

"We deleted the tweet, secured our account and are now investigating this," the company added.

President Trump - who is meeting with Taoiseach Enda Kenny this afternoon - has previously expressed his fondness for fast food, in particular McDonald's fish fillet burger.

During a CNN event during the election campaign, Trump said: "One bad hamburger, you can destroy McDonald's. One bad hamburger and you take Wendy's and all these other places and they're out of business.

"I like cleanliness, and I think you're better off going there than maybe some place that you have no idea where the food is coming from."
