There has been more than 460 cases of Garda vehicles being rammed since the start of 2010.

In the first six weeks of this year, there were eight reports of people deliberately crashing into a Garda vehicle.

In total, 466 incidents were reported since 2010.

In response to a parliamentary question from Fine Gael's Brendan Griffin, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said: "The safety of the members of An Garda Síochána and the general public on our roads is of critical importance.

"It is essential that Gardaí are protected in carrying out their work and that the law reflects and responds to the situations in which Gardaí find themselves."

Minister Fitzgerald added that she has requested data on the number of Gardaí who have been injured as a result of vehicles being rammed.
