The remains of Hollywood actress and singer Judy Garland have been moved cross-country from New York to Los Angeles.

Reports say the move is at the request of her two daughters, Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft.

It will see Garland moved to a mausoleum that will also serve as the resting place for her daughters and other family members.

It is believed the space in the mausoleum, renamed the Judy Garland Pavilion, has room for all her family – including grandchildren.

A spokeswoman for the Hollywood Forever Cemetery said the move was made “after many years of family consultations and deliberations”.

The move reflects resolution of an issue involving Garland's fifth husband Mickey Deans, according to family spokeswoman Victoria Varela.

"When Judy Garland died, her affairs were controlled by her husband, Mickey Deans", Varela told the Associated Press.

"Her children had no say in the matter of her burial, so this is at last their opportunity to do what they feel their mother would have wanted in the first place: to be united with her family in Hollywood".

A private unveiling ceremony of Garland's crypt will be held at a later date.
