There were, as ever, a few surprises when the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were released this morning. In a break from tradition, there was no live announcement or giggles at mispronounced names, with the Academy instead releasing a video that was played on Good Morning America.

One of two Irish nominees is costume designer Consolata Boyle, taking her second nomination for Florence Foster Jenkins, which also saw its star Meryl Streep receive a 'Best Actress' nomination. Streep will compete with Irish actress Ruth Negga, who was nominated for her role in Loving, likely elbowing out Amy Adams in what was the most competitive category for the second year running.

The Lobster, which was shot and financed in Ireland, also received a nomination, with Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos recognised in the 'Best Original Screenplay' category.

Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, fresh from breaking the all-time record at the Golden Globes with its seven wins, once again leads the charge, taking 14 nods, tying for the most ever. Should it repeat its Globes success, the old-school Hollywood musical looks set to become only the fourth film to win the famous ‘Big Five’ of ‘Picture’, ‘Actor’, ‘Actress’, ‘Director’, and ‘Screenplay’, last claimed by The Silence of the Lambs 26 years ago.

But La La Land’s road to the record books will face stiff competition from Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea and Barry Jenkin’s Moonlight, which received six and eight nominations respectively. Arrival was nominated for eight awards, Fences for four, and the Mel Gibson-directed Hacksaw Ridge took six.

The biggest high-profile snub was arguably the near complete washout of Martin Scorsese’s labour of love Silence, which only claimed a cinematography nomination, and Pixar's Finding Dory found no love from the Academy at all.

The 89th Oscars ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 26th at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with chat show host Jimmy Kimmel set to take on hosting duties for the first time. The full list of nominees reads as follows:
