'Loving' actress Ruth Negga is one of Ireland's front-runners for a Golden Globe award on Sunday night.

Ethiopian-born Negga is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama.

She plays Mildred Loving - one half of an interracial couple, whose challenge of their anti-miscegenation arrest for their marriage in Virginia led to a legal battle that would end at the US Supreme Court.

The John Carney-directed Sing Street is up for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

It tells the story of a boy growing up in Dublin during the 1980s, who escapes his strained family life by starting a band to impress the mysterious girl he likes.

Dubliner Colin Farrell is on the ticket for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for his performance in The Lobster, while Caitriona Balfe is in the running for Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Drama for Outlander.

Television

E! is broadcasting Live From The Red Carpet from 11:00pm Sunday. This will catch the celebrities and nominees as they head in for the ceremony, as well as the inevitable "who are you wearing?" questions we all love so much.

The main event begins at 1.00am Irish time on Monday morning.

US broadcaster NBC will be showing it live, but geo restrictions may prevent Irish internet users from watching.

However, RTÉ2 will be broadcasting highlights of the awards on Monday January 9th from 8.40pm
