The Health Minister says the HSE's nursing recruitment event has been a success, despite fewer than 100 people registering their interest.

The HSE has 1,000 permanent nursing jobs to fill. However, the executive says it never expected to fill all of the positions in the space of three days.

Minister Simon Harris was at the recruitment event in Dublin earlier, which is aimed at nurses who are home in Ireland for Christmas.

The HSE says they envisage the positions being filled by the end of 2017, and plan to hold more recruitment days around the country throughout the year.

Minister Harris says the three-day recruitment event - which got underway at Dr Steeven’s Hospital in Dublin yesterday - has been positive so far.

"I understand 52 nurses and midwives have been interviewed today," he explained. "36 people attended yesterday - 19 people were offered jobs yesterday, and another is awaiting registration.

"When you consider that the 'Bring Them Home' campaign - which was a campaign that ran for a sustained period of time - only managed to bring back 88 nurses [...] We've interviewed 52 today and hired 19 yesterday... and we have another day to go tomorrow," he added.
