The figures were released as part of the RSA's Christmas and New Year Drink Driving Campaign
350 people were arrested in December this year for drink driving, Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) confirmed.
As part of their Christmas and New Year Drink Driving Campaign, Assistant Commissioner Michael Finn appealed again "to every driver thinking of taking a chance with their life or someone else’s".
The number is up on the same period for last year’s campaign, with 89 more high risk drivers taken off the road to prevent a road accident.
"This significant increase in detections show increased Garda activity but disappointingly shows there are some who still refuse to heed all the safety messages," Assistant Commissioner Finn added. "We will continue to seek out these high risk drivers over the coming weeks on a 24/7 basis, to make the roads safer for all road users.”
As of 16th December there have been 182 road fatalities, an increase of 34 on this date in 2015.
The RSA launched their campaign on December 1st, fronted by the Treacy family who tragically lost their 4 year old son Ciarán in a road traffic collision involving a drunk driver.
