Students and staff at a Dutch university have passed Go and gone directly into the record books, after creating the world's largest board game.

People in Wageningen re-created the iconic board game, which measured 900.228 m² (9,689.97 ft²).

It was made of 804 individual panels attached together.

The students also created a massive dice, and even houses to complete the game.

The event was sponsored by the game's producer, Hasbro.

Once it was all put together on a sports field, the students got a chance to play the giant game.

Participants stood in for playing tokens and acted as the silver boots, iron, top hat and wheel barrow.

But a real dog played the part of the animal token.

After the game, official Guinness World Records adjudicator Jack Brockbank announced that Studentenvereniging Ceres had successfully broken the previous record.

That was a board measuring 744.867 m² (8,017.69 ft²), which was achieved in the US earlier this year.
