More than 500 migrants have been rescued by an Irish naval vessel in the Mediterranean.

The LÉ Samuel Beckett was on a search and rescue operation 50 nautical miles north-west of Tripoli.

It followed a request from the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre in the early hours of Monday morning.

The ship located and rescued a total of 508 migrants from four separate rubber vessels.

The first rescue operation began at 2.20am, and all migrants were taken on board LÉ Samuel Beckett by 12.20pm.

They are now receiving food, water and medical treatment where required.

The vessel is bringing all those rescued to a designated port of safety.

This brings to 2,818 the number of migrants rescued by the LÉ Samuel Beckett since it was deployed to the area on September 23rd.
