It is a truth universally accepted that, when it comes to trilogies of would-be blockbusters inspired by characters in the X-Men canon, the third one is always the worst.

It’s a truth so honest that they even made a joke about it in 2016 X-Men: Apocalypse, which, itself, fell foul of the curse of the threequel. But what if the third part of a franchise comes after two preceding duds? Well, in that case, it looks like it might be third time’s the charm as Hugh Jackman bows out of the character that made him a household name.

After a lot of teasing, 20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for the standalone Wolverine film Logan, which will reportedly be the final time the Australian actor portrays the metal-clawed human.

The film, which draws from the 2008 comic book series Old Man Logan, shows a bleak and desolate world, where the mutants and X-Men are gone and an aged Wolverine is finally showing his vintage. A familiar face in the form of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X appears, shepherding a young girl named Laura, who takes after Wolverine in more ways than one.

Playing out over the mournful sounds of Johnny Cash’s Hurt, Logan looks like Jackman’s swansong could well be one of the franchise’s sweetest. The film is slated for release on March 3rd, and you can watch the trailer in full below:
