With the Great British Bake-Off reaching its penultimate episode on the BBC this week, news has emerged that Channel 4, which claimed the rights to the popular competitive baking show in a deal worth £75m, is lining up Richard Ayoade to fill the presenting shoes left vacant by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins decision not to defect to the rival broadcaster.

Tipped to be announced as the new presenter of the show, Ayoade is best known for his role as Moss in the popular Channel 4 sitcom The IT Crowd, as well as for his work presenting Gadget Man and Travel Man on the network. Ayoade has also appeared in Channel 4’s Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, Nathan Barley, and has featured in the Big Fat Quiz format, as well as having directed two critically-lauded feature films.

According to reports in The Sun, a Channel 4 source said: “Richard is a really popular choice at the minute, as many think he’s got a great character that would bring a great spark to the show.

“He’s got a wonderful off-beat sense of humour which would really fit the change of channel, and would no doubt be a popular choice with viewers too.”

If Ayoade joins the show, he will work with the only remaining original GBBO star to have jumped ship with the show, judge Paul Hollywood. Hollywood’s co-judge Mary Berry made the decision to step down from the show, citing “loyalty” to the BBC.

With a ‘cooling-off clause’ written into the show’s contract with the British national broadcaster, Love Productions, the company behind the internationally successful format, must wait until 2018 before relaunching the Bake Off on the commercial channel. Following the announcement that Berry, Giedroyc and Perkins would not go with it, it is expected that the BBC will launch a rival show in the next year, with 2015 GBBO champion Nadiya Hussain believed to be in the running to come on board.
