An intruder was shot during a break-in at supermodel Miranda Kerr's mansion in Los Angeles, it has been reported.

Police said they were called to a home in Malibu after a "physical altercation" between an armed guard and an intruder.

Neighbours said the mansion belongs to Australian supermodel Kerr, local TV news station KTLA reports.

During the incident, the security guard reportedly shot the intruder in the head, while the guard was stabbed in the face.

Police said they were both taken to hospital - the intruder was in a critical condition with non-life threatening injuries and the guard was said to be in a stable condition.

In a statement, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said: "There were no occupants in the house at the time of this incident.

"The incident took place on the property, but not inside the house."

Police tweeted a picture of medics providing care to a "stabbing victim" being airlifted to hospital shortly after the incident.

"It's kind of a crazy thing to happen out here in Malibu," neighbour Craig Moore told KTLA.

"I guess it happens everywhere but we just don't ever have it happen in our neighbourhood."

It was reportedly the second time in a week police had responded to an intruder call at the house in Malibu.

Kerr, 33, bought her Los Angeles home with ex-husband, British actor Orlando Bloom, in 2014.

The mansion was photographed for the September issue of Harper's Bazaar, in which Kerr said the property was "very private".

She told the magazine: "I knew that this house was it at first sight.

"It needed a lot of work, but it had a great view.

"It wasn't right on the water, so it was protected from the wind and very private. I could just see the potential."
