Gardaí launch murder investigation following Limerick assault

Gardaí have conducted house-to-house inquiries in the area and CCTV footage is being compiled

A murder investigation has been launched into the death of a man following a serious assault in Limerick.

Gerard Freyne, 51, sustained serious head injuries in an altercation at the junction of Lord Edward Street and Lower Carey’s Road in the city on Wednesday night.

He was treated at University Hospital Limerick before being transferred to Cork University Hospital.

He was pronounced dead shortly before 5:30am this morning.

Gardaí say a postmortem, which is taking place, will determine the course of the murder investigation.
