Man arrested following fatal stabbing in Waterford

A man has been arrested after another died following a stabbing in Waterford.

Gardaí are investigating the incident which happened on New Street on Saturday morning.

At around 3.20am, gardaí were alerted by a member of the public to a man who was seriously injured following an altercation with another man.

A 28-year-old man had been stabbed and was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where he was pronounced dead.

While a 35-year-old man was arrested nearby and is currently being held under the provisions of Section 4 of The Criminal Justice Act at Waterford garda station.

The scene is currently preserved for a technical examination and the offices of the State Pathologist have been notified.

The Garda Technical Bureau is scheduled to attend the scene later.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who may have been in the New Street/John Street area between 3.00am and 4.00am to contact them.
