Motorists have been reminded not to drive while tired after a car crash in Waterford.

It is understood the weekend collision happened after a driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Gardaí shared a picture of the smashed crash on social media this morning.

In a tweet, they advised drivers to stop in a safe place and take a nap if feeling sleep.

A spokesperson told Newstalk.com that the person involved in the Waterford accident was uninjured.

The warning comes as the Road Safety Authority launches its annual safety week.

This year's event will focus on motorcycle, tyre and vulnerable road user safety.

Some 138 people have been killed on Irish roads so far in 2017, an increase of 21 when compared to the same period last year.
