One person has died after a shooting close to a college campus in the US.

Police officers responded near the University of Illinois after receiving multiple reports of shots fired.

The four victims were found on-scene with gunshot wounds, and transported to area hospitals.

Police say one man died and three other people sustained non-critical injuries.

A fifth individual who was running from the gunfire was struck by a vehicle, and received minor injuries.

The Champaign County Coroner, Duane Northrup, identified the dead man as George Korchev. He was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital.

"Preliminary investigations suggest that an argument took place during an apartment party in the 300 Block of E. Green", police say.

"The argument transitioned outside where a fight broke out and shots were fired.

"The victims in the incident were not involved in the fight. Mr Korchev was walking near the area when the shots were fired."

While around 30 minutes later, police received another report of gunfire - and a victim was transported to hospital with a non-critical gunshot wound.

It is believed the two shooting incidents may be related.

Police say they are seeking a suspect in both shootings, as well as the driver involved in the vehicle accident.
