Dozens of puppies have been stopped from travelling from Dublin Port this week, bring to 150 the number of animals seized in the last two months.

An operation involving gardaí, customs officers and the DSPCA saw 54 dogs seized from a car at the port on Wednesday evening.

Five pups were found in a horse box at the same location a day before.

Both shipments were seized under the pet passport regulations of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013.

The puppies, both small and medium breeds, are now receiving veterinary care.

Anyone interested in homing the animals has been asked to visit the DSPCA to speak to an adoptions consultant.

The charity today reminded people involved in illegal trade that failure to comply with the dog export regulations will result in seizure and prosecution.
