People who hope to drive New York City's famous yellow cabs no longer need to have a grasp of English.

A new law streamlining licensing requirements has done away with the long-standing English proficiency test. Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the changes into law after they were approved by the City Council last April.

Immigrants make up 96 percent of the cabbies - and most rely on sat navs to reach a destination. The move is seen as a step to bring parity for yellow cabs with app-based services such as Uber.
