Six people have died off the British coast in 24 hours amid unseasonably stormy conditions.

Three men, two women and a child were killed in separate incidents across the UK.

On Friday afternoon, Rudy Bruynius was with wife Lisinda and children on Cornwall's Fistral Beach when they were hit by a large wave amid strong winds.

Lifeguards were alerted at 5.20pm but he was later pronounced dead in hospital, while his daughter McKayla was reported to be in a critical condition. Two other children in the family managed to scramble back on to the rocks. 

Bruynius was originally from South Africa but had been living in London.

Yesterday, five other people also lost their lives during the stormy weather.

They included a windsurfer in his 60s who was rescued by lifeboats off the coast of Essex around midday. He later died in hospital.

In Dorset, a man got into trouble outside the safe swim area at Sandbanks in Poole at around 3.30pm. The victim was recovered from the water by lifeguards who performed CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later, a boy and his mother died after getting into difficulty in the water at Aberdeen beach at 4.45pm.

Lucas Walker (6) died in hospital along with his mother Julie Walker (37). Lucas' brother Samuel tried to save them, and went into the sea, but is now being treated in hospital.

Last night a swimmer also lost her life after she got into difficulty in waters off Jersey.

The island's coastguard received a call at 8.20pm and two boats, including one from the RNLI, tried to rescue her. She was taken to hospital but later died.

Jersey Police have said the woman and a man - both aged in their 30s - had gone into the water together. The man was rescued by a member of the public.
