There is arguably no car hood ornament fancier than the Rolls Royce one. Named The Spirit of Ecstasy, standing 3 inches tall, billowing fabric from her outstretched arms, nabbing one of them on Ebay will set you back as much as $500. Which is why the more economic car enthusiast might, in a moment of madness, attempt to snatch one off a park Rolls. Which is also why the car’s engineers have designed an obnoxiously brilliant safety mechanism from stopping you doing so.

As you can see in the video below, when anyone attempts to move the hood ornament, it immediately disappears back inside the car. The feature has been standard on all Rolls Royces since 2004, and allows the owners – or their drivers – to raise it back up again from inside the car.
