The anthology film is about the attempt to steal the plans of the Death Star
With the arrival of a new trailer for December’s Star War: Rogue One, the Garth Edwards-directed spin off reintroduces us to an old enemy, with the breathy wheezes of Darth Vader sending fans’ hearts pumping like some Pavlovian response. The movie, set shortly before the events of 1977’s A New Hope kick off, will see the franchise’s most iconic villain in, at the very least, a massive cameo, though there’s plenty of new characters to fall in love with too.
Front and centre is Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, the leader of a group of rogues and mechanical misfits charged with the difficult task of stealing the blueprints to the Death Star. While anyone – and by that read everyone – already knows they manage to get away with them in time for Luke Skywalker to do his thing, but the heist is where the action is, and judging by the trailer, it’s a solemn and action-packed affair.
In addition to Jones, we also get out first proper look at Alan Tudyk’s take on the newest robot set to charm its way into your affections, with K-2SO looking a little like The Iron Giant’s automaton, but dropping awkward truth bombs around the place. Add to that Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe and Diego Luna’s Captain Cassian Andor and December 16th can’t come quickly enough.
