A man and woman have been airlifted to safety after becoming lost on a Mayo mountain.

The couple, believed to be from Northern Ireland, had been walking on Mweelrea yesterday evening when they became disorientated and called for help at around 9pm.

A spokesperson for Malin Coast Guard said an search involving Achill Lifeboat, Westport Coastguard and Mayo Mountain Rescue took about an hour to locate them.
