The new president of Peru kicked off his first cabinet meeting in quite an unusual way - with an outdoor workout for his ministers.

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (77) took office late last month after winning 50.1% of eligible votes in June's run-off election.

With around 40,000 votes separating the two candidates, it is reported to have been the closest election in the country's history.

His cabinet met for the first time on Thursday, but before business got underway the ministers took to the patio of the government palace in Lima for a fitness session.

Kuczynski told reporters they "want to promote health, a healthy mind in a healthy body," according to Reuters.

The news agency says the new president had faced questions about his age and health during the election campaign.

He has now pledged that the workout will be repeated by the cabinet every week, with media to be invited along for the occasion.
