The WWII epic stars Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and One Dirction's Harry Styles
Fresh from the critical battering its 2016 summer tent pole movie Suicide Squad has taken, Warner Bros has released the first teaser trailer for next year’s hopeful, the Christopher Nolan-directed WWII drama Dunkirk. The film, shot in the French city, stars Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and Harry Styles in his acting debut.
The period drama tells the story of the 1940 evacuation of British forces from France that resulted in the saving of thousands of allies soldiers from the forward-marching Nazis. Similar to Stephen Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, which opened with the deployment of the Allies on the beaches of Normandy, Dunkirk also starts with thousands of extras trapped on a beach while German forces close in on them.
The teaser showcases the brutal and gritty style that Nolan is known for, with the cast of characters working to turn the tide and flee to freedom. The film was filmed on both IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-formats, and shot by Dutch cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema, best known for his previous collaboration with Nolan on Interstellar.
As for the director, reports have emerged claiming that Nolan has purchased a real WWII fighter plane for the express purposes of crashing it on set, in what would be an authentic and audacious stunt.
Dunkirk will be released on July 21st, 2017. You can watch the teaser trailer in full below:
