More than 18,000 contraband cigarettes have been seized by Revenue officers in Dublin Airport.

The NZ-branded cigarettes were discovered this afternoon in the checked-in luggage of a 42-year-old Estonian man.

Their retail value is estimated to be in the region of €9,700, representing a potential loss to the exchequer of around €7,700.

The man was arrested and brought before Dublin District Court this afternoon, where Judge Miriam Walsh remanded him in custody to Cloverhill prison until next Friday.

A Revenue spokesperson said: “The majority of people pay the right amount of tax and duty.

“If you know someone is evading tax or involved in smuggling, report it to Revenue.

“You can do this quickly, easily and confidentially using our secure online reporting form or by contacting our confidential free phone number 1800 295 295.”
