New TDs describe their weirdest moments in Dáil Eireann
It’s eleven weeks since the government was formed and the new TDs finally got down to work after lengthy government formation talks.
There’s been plenty of frustration for the fresh faced TDs, and plenty of weird moments as well.
In a survey for Newstalk new deputies revealed the weirdest moments they’ve had in Leinster House:
Lisa Chambers, Fianna Fáil: "My mother telling me I look tired and can I not call Micheal Martin today and tell him I won't be in, Haha!"
Kate O'Connell, Fine Gael: "The amount of people who mistake me for Deirdre O'Kane is quite odd!"
Brid Smith, People Before Profit: "Driving in one day to the Dáil and had the dog on front seat. Security man was shocked and shouted "Deputy! Dog! I never saw anything like it!"
Mick Barry, AAA/PBP: "Going back to my B&B exhausted, switching on Vincent Browne, falling asleep and waking up to see a clip of myself on the telly (very weird)."
Denise Mitchell, Sinn Féin: "Getting lost in Government buildings."
Jack Chambers, Fianna Fáil: "The interest in my hair!"
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, Sinn Féin: "Still strange to be recognized commonly in the street, although once or twice have been mistaken for a PA while in Leinster House, which is amusing in it's own way."
Marc Mac Sharry, Fianna Fáil: "Asked to do the 'full Monty' for a fundraiser (I declined)"
Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, Independent Alliance: "The day I wore my Denis The Menace tie to The Dail. It went viral!"
Catherine Martin, Green Party: "I am still getting used to being called "Deputy". And while it is great to see the increase in female representatives in the Dáil and that is certainly moving in the right direction, the first time I sat in the Dáil chamber it was hard to ignore that the overwhelming picture is one of a sea of suits. That needs to change."
Frank O'Rourke, Fianna Fáil: "Some people being opportune and small minded when they put me up on Joe.ie on the first day in the Dáil being accused of signalling to the public gallery to go for a pint when I was actually signalling to my daughter that I would come up to her after the vote!!"
