Car filled with gas cylinders driven into police station car park in Sydney

Police in Sydney have confirmed the man who attempted to drive his car into a police station was not motivated by terrorism.

Earlier today, a major police operation was under way in Sydney after the man rammed the police station car park claiming to have a bomb.

According to local media reports, the car was laden with gas bottles but they did not detonate.

New South Wales police say no officers were injured in the attack, and the driver has been taken into custody.

Detectives say the man is well-known to the police with a long history of mental illness.

Roads nearby Merrylands police station in western Sydney have been closed and witnesses have reported a strong burning smell.
