The number of homeless children in Ireland rose to 2,206 last month.

That is 67% higher than the numbers for June last year.

New figures from the Department of the Environment show almost 1,100 families were homeless at the end of last month.

Over two-thirds of homeless people were in the Dublin region.

The figures were compiled during the week of June 20th.

They comes as the Government announced plans to build 47,000 social houses by 2021.
