The Republican National Convention is underway in Cleveland Ohio where a number of protests are also taking place.

Donald Trump campaign managers say they intend to show another side to the billionaire this week, whose critics see him as an unhinged autocrat with little grasp of foreign policy or the workings of government.

Members of the so-called 'Never Trump' campaign aimed at stopping him from winning to nomination tried a last gasp effort to thwart his nomination - by trying to force a state-by-state vote and disrupting proceedings.

It is unlikely to succeed however.

The convention will hear tonight from Mr Trump's wife, Melania, as one of the top-billed spokespersons.

It is set to nominate Donald Trump as the party's presidential candidate.

Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus used the opening of the conference to remember police officers killed in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

Earlier chairperson of the Michigan Republican Party, Ronna Romney McDaniel, spoke to Newstalk.com's Shona Murray.
