British Prime Minister Theresa May has spoken by phone to Taoiseach Enda Kenny tonight

Mr Kenny received a phone call shortly after 9pm.

They spoke about the Northern Ireland peace process and the challenges for the Republic and the North when Brexit happens.

Mr Kenny and Mrs May also agreed to meet each other in the coming weeks.

Earlier today, Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan released a statement congratulating Boris Johnson on his appointment to the new cabinet.

Mr Flanagan said he was looking forward to working with the Foreign Secretary on "the various bilateral issues that engage our two Governments and hope we will have an opportunity for an early meeting".

He also acknowledged the many issues facing Mr Johnson, and said he was very pleased to see that his predecessor, Philip Hammond, had been appointed as Chancellor.

"Mr Hammond and I enjoyed a very positive and friendly working relationship. I congratulate Philip on his appointment to this high office and wish him every success in his new role," Mr Flanagan said.
