Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton star in 'Loving'

2016 is Ruth Negga’s year. The Irish-Ethiopian actress rose to national fame when staring in Breakfast on Pluto, Love is the Drug, and Love/Hate. She has now achieved international acclaim for starring turns in Preacher and Loving, the movie that has her already hotly tipped to bag an Academy Award nomination for ‘Best Actress’. And now the trailer for the Cannes Film Festival hit has finally been released online.

The drama comes from writer/director Jeff Nichols and tells the story of the real-life Richard and Mildred Loving, whose civil rights case went all the way to the US Supreme Court, leading to a landmark ruling on the rights of interracial marriage. The feature film was inspired by the 2011 documentary The Loving Story, which won an Emmy and a Peabody Award for telling the couple’s story.

Now dramatised, critics have already heaped praise onto the quiet but powerful performances of Negga and Australian actor Joel Edgerton as Mildred and Richard. The film also stars Michael Shannon and comedian Nick Kroll and will come to Irish cinemas on February 3rd, three weeks before Oscar night.
