Tourist dies in Machu Picchu taking photograph

The 51-year-old was reportedly in a restricted area at the historic site

51-year-old German tourist Oliver Park died at Peruvian historical tourist attraction Machu Picchu while taking a photograph.

Reports indicate that Park was in a restricted area of the landmark when he died.

According to ITV, witnesses claim that Park said: "I’m going to jump in the air – take a photo for me as a memory”, but Park lost his footing and feel into a deep abyss.

However, witnesses told Canal N - a 24-hour Peruvian news channel - that Park did not leap, but stumbled off a ledge when he attempted to hand his camera to another tourist.

It took rescue teams an hour and a half to reach Park, and declared him dead at the scene.
