Fun-loving Irish fans at Euro 2016 could boost tourism

Minister thinks our soccer fans behaviour will result in a boost to the economy

The behaviour of Irish fans at the Euros could see a boost in visits to Ireland, according to the Tourism Minister.

Shane Ross said the travelling fans are the best ambassadors Ireland could ask for.

While 36 mostly English fans have been arrested after violence in Lille, Irish fans in Paris were filmed cleaning up the city - chanting "clean up for the boys in green".

Minister Shane Ross told Newstalk their attitude will likely lead to more people visiting Ireland.

"The Irish fans are fantastic, the Irish fans do us proud," he said.

"They're the best ambassadors we could possibly have abroad.

"I think they will bring in, by themselves, by their friendly attitudes, by their portrayal of Ireland as a wonderful sporting nation. They'll bring in tourism and they'll contribute to the growth of our economy.

"It's a great occasion, and I think we should be very proud of them."
