A Coast Guard helicopter and a local sub-aqua club rushed to the incident in the river Corrib
Gardaí are carrying out investigations after two people drowned in separate incidents in Galway city.
A 19-year-old man got into difficulty while swimming in the River Corrib at Dangan close to NUIG at around 2pm today.
People who witnessed the incident from the river bank raised the alarm and a Coast Guard helicopter, the fire brigade and a Galway sub-aqua club all rushed to the scene.
The man’s body was removed from the water shortly after 4pm and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
At around the same time a passerby alerted emergency services to an incident at the docks where a woman had entered the water.
The RNLI lifeboat attended the scene in the harbour and assisted in removing the woman’s body from the water. The woman has yet to be formally identified but it is believed she was aged in her 40s or 50s. She was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Post mortem examinations on both of the people will be carried out at University Hospital Galway.
