The White House was briefly put in lockdown today after a shooting near the building.

The Treasury Department in Washington was also locked down during the incident, US media has reported.

The lockdown has since been lifted.

ABC News says that one person was shot by law enforcement near the White House. The wounded man is believed to have been taken to hospital.

The Secret Service has confirmed a shooting took place, and that 'all protectees are safe':

The New York Times reports that Barack Obama was not in the White House when the lockdown started, as he was playing golf at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.
