Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has warned that the attacks which took place in Brussels on Tuesday morning are "just the beginning".

Trump, who has spoken frequently about taking a tougher stance on immigration and even touted a potential ban on all Muslims entering the United States, described the scenes in Brussels as a "disaster".

The businessman stated that what is happening in Brussels is something which could be repeated elsewhere, including in the Untied States: "Brussels was a beautiful city, a beautiful place with zero crime. And now it's a disaster city. It's a total disaster, and we have to be very careful in the United States, we have to be very careful and very vigilant as to who we allow in this country".

He added that Brussels was a "magical city" 20 years ago, but that it had been turned into an armed camp as a result of the attacks in Paris in November: "You want to lead your life, you don't want to be living in an armed camp for your whole life. And there is a certain group of people that is making living a normal life impossible".

He added that the attacks are "just the beginning" and that the situation is likely to "get worse and worse because we are lax and foolish".

Although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, Trump stated that "they could be ISIS, they could be ISIS-related", and that there needs to be closer inspection on borders both in the United States as well as in other countries around Europe.
