Fijian authorities are hoping to get emergency response personnel to the remotest regions of the nation today, as they continue their efforts to assess the scale of the damage after a major weekend cyclone.

At least 21 people are known to have died after Cyclone Winston hit the region.

However, the death toll is expected to rise since many parts of Fiji are difficult to access with poor communications.

The New Zealand air force is assisting in the relief effort.

A C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft delivered 12 tons of relief supplies to Fiji early on Wednesday morning, including water and food.

A massive clean-up operation is underway.
