President Michael D Higgins is marking the contributions made by Irish radio stations today.

Speaking on World Radio Day, the President and former Minister for Broadcasting says we now have an "unparalleled opportunity" to give the voiceless the chance to be heard in our society.

He says the reduction in the costs of broadcasting means the medium is now more accessible than it ever was.

Michael D Higgins says the country's radio stations are an invaluable resource for empowering our citizens.

He adds that he is pleased to see how it has become "a great asset in relation to local history":
