Aaren O'Connor was hit by a stray bullet in Chicago
A woman has died after being hit by a stray bullet while sitting in her car and talking to her father on the phone.
Aaren O'Connor was outside her apartment complex in Chicago, Illinois, when she was hit in the head on Friday, according to US media reports.
The 25-year-old's father David told CBS Chicago: "Every few moments she said, 'My head hurts. My head hurts'."
Mr O'Connor eventually hung up, not quite sure what had happened.
"I didn't realise at the time but I was just having the last conversation with my daughter," he said.
Mr O'Connor discovered what had happened when he contacted his daughter's boyfriend, who called her roommate to check up on her.
Ms O'Connor was found unresponsive in her car and was taken to hospital. She died on Sunday.
CBS Chicago reported she had moved to the city last year for a new job and to be closer to her boyfriend.
Mr O'Connor told the station he feared something bad might happen to his daughter when she left San Diego, California.
In the aftermath of her death, Ms O'Connor's friends have set up a GoFundMe page, with the money donated going towards helping at-risk young people in Chicago and funding a scholarship in her memory.
"It gives her life meaning, and I so appreciate it," Mr O'Connor told CBS.
