Micheál Martin defends €30,000 salary top-up in 2014

Fianna Fáil's leader has defended taking a €30,000 salary top-up from his party's taxpayer funding.

Micheal Martin says the payment for his duties as party leader is fully sanctioned by law and fully transparent.

According to the Independent, the top-up raised Martin's salary to €117,258 in 2014.

The paper says Martin was the only party leader to dip into the funds provided to parties and TD to increase his pay beyond that of the basic TD salary.

However the TD has denied the paper's claims that the payment was exempt from income tax.
